Hotel Aurora sits on Paassaasivik, a street of workshops and warehouses in the older industrial part of Nuuk, behind a brightly coloured facade that is hard to miss. It is a young, family-run hotel with 32 rooms, a breakfast buffet and free parking, and it has quickly become one of the better-rated hotels in Greenland’s capital. Travellers on Booking.com give it 8.4 out of 10 and keep mentioning the same two things: staff who go out of their way to help, and quiet, comfortable rooms. The neighbourhood looks rough around the edges on arrival, and the walk to the centre takes about 15 minutes. This guide covers the rooms, prices, food, location and reviews, compares Aurora with the other hotels in Nuuk, and helps you decide if it suits your trip.

What is Hotel Aurora Nuuk?

In short: a small, family-run boutique hotel in Nuuk with 32 modern rooms of about 16 to 17 m², classified as 3 stars by the Hotelstars Union. It is one of the newer hotels in the city and aims at couples, families and business travellers who want a quiet room, breakfast and parking at a lower price than the central hotels.

Nuuk has only a handful of real hotels, and most of them are either historic business hotels in the centre or guesthouses and apartments. Hotel Aurora sits between the two. It has the services of a hotel, with a reception, a breakfast buffet, a lounge and housekeeping, but the scale and feel of a family business. The owners run it themselves, and that shows in the reviews: guests describe being welcomed by name, getting help with taxis and tours, and leaving with the feeling that the staff cared about their stay.

The hotel has 32 rooms: 19 double rooms, 12 family rooms and a single room. The rooms are compact, modern and simply furnished, with air-conditioning, a private bathroom, a desk, a TV and a wardrobe. The family rooms have extra beds on a loft level, which makes them one of the few affordable options in Nuuk for parents travelling with children. Hotel Aurora was classified as a 3-star hotel by the Hotelstars Union, the European hotel rating system used in Denmark and Greenland.

Where is Hotel Aurora Nuuk?

In short: at Paassaasivik 8, 3900 Nuuk, in the older industrial quarter between the city centre and the harbour. The centre and the Katuaq Cultural Centre are about 1 to 1.5 km away, a 12 to 15 minute walk; Nuuk Airport is about 5 km away, 10 to 15 minutes by car.

Location is the hotel’s weakest score, 7.3 out of 10 on Booking.com, and it helps to know why before you book. Paassaasivik is a working street with warehouses, garages and workshops, so the first impression from a taxi window is not pretty. Guests who stayed there are almost unanimous that the area is safe and quiet, and that the hotel itself is cosy once you are inside. Several reviews say the centre is closer than they expected: about 10 to 15 minutes on foot to the shops, restaurants and the harbour where boat trips start.

In summer the walk into town is easy. In winter, with ice on the pavements, wind and only a few hours of daylight, many guests take a taxi in the evening; the reception can call one. Bring shoes with a good grip or slip-on ice cleats from October to April. If you have a hire car, the free parking makes the location much less of an issue, and the hotel has a charging point for electric cars.

Rooms and prices

In short: double rooms, family rooms with a loft and one single room, all with a private bathroom, air-conditioning, TV, free Wi-Fi, breakfast and a parking space included. The rooms are small by European standards, around 16 to 17 m², but guests rate comfort at 9.0, the hotel’s second-best score. Beds get good marks, and the rooms are described as clean, warm and quiet, which matters more in Nuuk than in most cities: in summer it barely gets dark, and in winter the wind can howl for days. Each room has an electric kettle. There are no extra beds, so book a family room if you are more than two; cots for babies are available on request, but confirm this with the hotel before you travel. Children 18 and over pay adult rates.

At the time of our check, the rooms could be booked with free cancellation until a few days before arrival and paid at the hotel before arrival. Conditions vary by rate and season, so read them on Booking.com before you confirm. With only 32 rooms, Hotel Aurora fills up quickly in summer and around Christmas and New Year, so book early for those dates.

Breakfast and dinner

In short: a continental breakfast buffet is included and served from 07:00 to 10:00. For dinner, most guests walk or take a taxi to the restaurants in the centre, about 1 km away.

Breakfast is one of the things guests mention most. The buffet has bread and pastries, cold cuts, cheese, yoghurt, cereal, fresh fruit, juice and good coffee, and a machine that boils eggs to order has a small fan club in the reviews. Vegetarians are covered with eggs, cheese, yoghurt and pastries; vegans will find plant milk, cereal, fruit and jam, but not much more, so bring your own extras. Breakfast starts at 07:00, so if you have a very early flight or boat trip, ask the reception the night before whether they can prepare something.

For lunch and dinner, plan on going into town. Booking.com lists Restaurant Iggu, Café Esmeralda and the Kristinemut pub at roughly 1.1 to 1.2 km from the hotel, and the centre has more choice, from Greenlandic dishes with musk ox and halibut to burgers and Thai food. Restaurant prices in Nuuk are high, so many guests buy food at the supermarkets in the centre for a simple evening meal in their room. If you’d like to try Greenlandic food with a story, the food tasting and storytelling experience is a good evening out.

How to choose: if you want to walk out of the door into the shops and restaurants, pay more for Hotel Hans Egede or Hotel Nordbo in the centre, or take an apartment with a kitchen. If you want a full hotel with breakfast at a lower price and don’t mind a 15-minute walk, Hotel Aurora is the obvious pick. If you want harbour views and an early breakfast for boat trips, read our review of Hotel Søma Nuuk. On a tight budget, the hostels and guesthouses in the centre cost less, but you often share a bathroom.

Hotel Aurora also runs Hotel Aurora Apartments, a separate property in the city centre with studios and kitchens, rated 8.4 overall and 9.4 for location. It suits longer stays and travellers who want to cook. It is listed separately on Booking.com, so search for it by name.

How to get to Hotel Aurora

Nuuk Airport is about 5 km from the hotel. A taxi from the rank outside arrivals takes 10 to 15 minutes. City buses connect the airport with the centre, and the hotel offers an airport shuttle on request for a fee; ask for it a few days before you arrive. Since Nuuk’s new runway opened, larger jets fly in directly from Copenhagen and, in some seasons, from North America, so arrival times have changed; tell the hotel if you land after 21:00. Routes, airlines and transfers are covered in getting to Nuuk.

Tours you can do from Hotel Aurora

In short: boat trips leave from the harbour, about 12 minutes’ walk away, and several Nuuk tours include hotel pickup, which saves the walk from Paassaasivik. Filter by pickup, boat trips or food, and sort by price.

Northern lights at Hotel Aurora

The name is a promise the sky sometimes keeps. From September to April, Nuuk is dark enough for the aurora, and the hotel’s position away from the brightest streets of the centre helps. On a clear night, step outside and walk a few minutes towards the water, away from the street lights, and look in every direction, not just north: Nuuk lies close to the auroral zone, so the lights often appear overhead. The reception books guided northern lights tours if you’d rather go further out of town. Forecasts, camera settings and the best spots around the city are in our northern lights guide.

Who is Hotel Aurora best for?

Hotel Aurora suits families, who get loft rooms and a play area at a lower price than the central hotels; road trippers and business travellers with a car, who get free parking and EV charging; and anyone who values friendly service, a quiet room and breakfast over a central address. It is a good base for a first trip to Nuuk if you combine walking with a few tours that include pickup. It is less suitable if you want a restaurant and bar in the building, arrive late at night without warning the hotel, or find walking on icy streets difficult; in that case, a hotel in the centre makes winter evenings easier.

Staying at Hotel Aurora in summer and winter

In summer, from June to August, Nuuk has light almost around the clock, the walk into town is pleasant, and boat trips run most days. Book the hotel months ahead, because Nuuk has few rooms and summer brings cruise passengers, hikers and conferences. In winter, from November to March, the days are short and cold, and the hotel’s warm rooms and breakfast count for more than the address. Plan taxis for the evenings, book tours with pickup, and use the long nights for aurora watching. Around Christmas and New Year, flights and hotels fill up early; our guides to Greenland at Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Greenland explain what is open.
